DIE RPG: I Go Infinite
Saturday, August 24 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
RPG System: DIE
The Premise
You were big-name players on the Mugen Clash tournament circuit. You had successes and dramas playing a trading card game (TCG) professionally and now you’re older, busier… and broke. You’ve gathered at the house of your old friend, an Ex-Judge on the circuit, to sell the sealed box of 1st Edition cards they have stashed.
But at the meeting, your friend puts a condition on the sale of the cards that they hold so dear… play a little game with them. Winner takes all.
What is DIE?
It is D&D meets Jumanji. You play someone from the real world (a ‘Persona’) who is transported to a fantasy world built around their own experiences, dreams, dramas and fears. In that world, they play a powerful character (‘Paragon’) with unique class abilities, who is trying to find a way out.
In this particular scenario, you will be using your Mugen Clash cards to channel your abilities, summon monsters, change the environment and generally have a good time. We’ll be using physical TCG cards of all flavours to generate the powers of the Mugen Clash cards.
Be warned: In DIE, the GM assigns the Paragon classes to the players. Please be sure you’re ok with this.
What do I need to bring?
Pencils are always handy, paper if you’re a note-taker. I will provide character sheets and dice.
I will also be providing a selection of (randomly selected) cards from different TCGs for use in-game – but if you want to, you would be very welcome to bring your own. Only six will end up used in the game, it doesn’t matter what system they are from or that they are from the same system (tarot and other illustrated playing cards also welcome) though I would recommend a selection of imagery on the cards – some creatures/people, some environment, some weapons, etc.
What safety tools will be in play?
DIE comes with a set of steps called Preparing the Magic Circle, which includes agreeing on tone, rules around inter-party conflict, the impact of certain abilities on player agency, subject matter that is left out (and brought into) the game and the type of ending everyone is happy working towards.
I also use the X Card mechanic during play, which allows the game to be paused and adjusted as soon as a player hits an issue, and can be used by any player at any time. I will also be checking in and adjusting throughout.
It is important to emphasise that DIE is a highly collaborative game, which gives players a lot of agency over the world and what happens in it – but that freedom requires a lot of negotiation-on-the-move and respect for everyone at the table. That’s what I’ll be there to facilitate.
